This CRONICLE OF the LM Ericsson Telephone Company bears no resemblance to the usual pious ’company history’.
The writers asked for a free hand, and the outcome is a fascinating story.
It tells how in 1876 a remarkable man, from a poor family in a Nordic country just entering the industrial era, laid the foundations for a telecommunications giant, and how his company grew and changed, again and again - and is still changing.
We see the triumphs the company has had, and its failures, and how the right people and the right technologies have somehovv always emerged just in time to drive the company to success.
Yet this is not an inward-looking story.
The company was founded in the year Bell invented the telephone, and its history is the history of vvorld telecommunications.
The men and machines of Ericsson’s competitors, customers and collaborators are shown interacting with Ericsson at every point.
World events, the wars and depressions and booms, provide the context for the story, and the book sheds its own light on the social and economic development of Sweden.
But people are at the heart of the chronicle, and wherever it can the book brings to life men and women who in many cases are no longer around to teli their own story.
Technology is treated lightly, illustrations are lavish, and the vvriting is full of humour.
