Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep was one of the biggest UK hits in 1971, all the more remarkable since the year before Lally Stott took the same song into the Top 20. MoR’s version is more urgent and the vocal far stronger. In the USA, Mac and Katie Kissoon had a moderate hit with this same tune. This charming collection of early 1970s powerpop also contains their hits Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum, Samson & Delilah, Soley Soley and others. The tremulous quality in the female voice on songs like Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and Tweedle Dee reminds me of that of Stevie Nicks , but when they did the straight ballad thing like Soley Soley the results weren’t that remarkable. I think they were a Scottish band and I remember seeing them live in South Africa way back. Middle of The Road didn’t make pop history, but some of these catchy songs still bring back pleasant childhood memories of a more innocent age and are useful for 70s parties.
